Are you a DIY-er?
I am. I will basically try anything myself. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? When Pinterest came along, I couldn’t get enough. I still love using it. Curtis, while not on Pinterest, enjoys using the word “pinteresting” to describe motivational posters written in hipster fonts. It’s one of his many dad jokes. Anyway, If we can save money by doing something ourselves, I promise you we will at least do the research and figure out how hard it really is. I even came home one time to C-blo (aka Curtis) watching a YouTube video with the entire dashboard of our car taken off.
When we bought our first house, we DIY’d the heck out of that place:
Paint cabinets: √
Re-do the sprinklers: √
Demo a couple of walls: √
We even figured out how to add overhead lights, although Curtis did install a couple of smoke detectors in the attic just in case his wiring was faulty (true story). Honestly, some of our biggest fights involved him in a 130-degree attic trying to thread a wire through to me down below while I yelled up to him, “It’s impossible, I can’t grab the wire!” (Turns out it wasn’t impossible.) Why? Because we thought we could. Most of the time, it saved us $$. I love knowing that if I wanted to, I could figure out how to do a floral arrangement, install tile or plan an awesome trip.
The DIY mentality is alive and well and has grown exponentially since the internet has become more accessible. (Sorry, taxi driver. I’m riding a Bird Scooter to work. Not because I’m coordinated or have a helmet or know any of the rules, but because I can.) Before the vastness of free information on the web, these were jobs reserved for professionals or the VERY BRAVE. Now, anyone can and will try it. My not-so-handy brother just laid his own hardwood floors, and they look great. Seriously!
We will go to great lengths to save $1000, but when it comes to buying or selling a home, we blindly give up an average of $10,000. That's crazy!
